A Visit to My Father-Land, Being Notes of a Journey to Syria and Palestine in 1843

Ridley H. Herschell, A Visit to My Father-Land, Being Notes of a Journey to Syria and Palestine in 1843, Philadelphia, Henry Longstreth, undated with "Preface to the Fourth Thousand" dated 1845. Dark brown cloth with blind-stamped design, gold lettering on spine, 12mo (15 cm), viii including alphabetical TOC, 216 pp. Travel journal of a Protestant missionary with Jewish parentage. Herschell observes worship practices (including Roman and Greek), social details such as clothing and the Turkish slave market (commenting that slavery was still practiced in so-called Christian countries), with descriptions of Biblical sites as he visited them. Good: covers bumped and worn with a chip missing at head of spine, discolored patch on top rear corner, old sticker on spine and po writing on pastedowns (church library), pages lightly tanned, no internal markings.
