The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Volumes 1-27, 1877-1903, with index. Philadelphia, The Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
Quarter black cloth spine with gold lettering and shield over red paper-covered boards, thick 8vo (25cm). Books have around 500 pages, individual indices, around 4-13 engravings including frontispieces, some with gilt top edges.
A treasure trove for genealogists and historians (individual names from lists not included in the 1954 index, but in volume indices). Includes town and settlement histories, church and cemetery records, biographical sketches and memoirs, family histories and pedigrees, extracts of journals and letters, travelogues, American Indian / indigenous tribe languages and history, military and civil (e.g. tax) lists, battles and anecdotes, ships, early printing and newspapers. Not limited to Pennsylvania, but includes early American history and neighboring states.
Good: Ex-library with spine and minor markings, covers rubbed with boards showing on edges, spine heads chipped (vol. 1 spine taped, vol. 2 spine coming off), many pages unopened, some roughly opened. About one third of the volumes show cracking around front endpapers or title page. Vol. 10, p. 77 torn. Vol. 6, rear covered dented. Vol. 13, rear cover has small gouges and light dampstain. Vol. 23, Benjamin Franklin'ÂÂs genealogical chart appears to have a misprint, with a portion of his siblings and their descendants blank.
With Index: edited by Eugene E. Doll, The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Index, Volumes 1-75 (1877-1951), Philadelphia, The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, 1954.
